Spice Court is the
pride of Jaipur. Now that they have also opened a branch in Gurgaon, but if you
happen to be in Jaipur and are craving for some yummy Laal Maas or Junglee Maas
or even some lip smacking Ker Sangri, spice Court is the place to be.
A friend of mine
used to be the executive Chef at Fairmont Jaipur, so having lived in Jaipur for
a long time, he strongly recommended we have atleast one meal at Spice Court. I
loved it how he spoke of Spice court’s food with conviction and confidence. So
since we were staying at the Ibis hotel in Civil lines hardly a 5 minute drive
from Spice Court we could definitely not miss going there. Located at the Hari
Bhawan, as you park and enter the premises of spice court, the place seems to
give you the look and feel of an East India company British Dining room. Very
crisp no frills attached interiors and polished staff dressed in uniforms, you
fall in love with the entire feel of the place.
The serving staff
is very alert and keep an eye on you while you dine and they recommended that
we order the famous Laal Maas instead of Junglee Maas and I loved how he indirectly
hinted that Junglee Maas was not for the faint hearted. Junglee Maas is a
Rajasthani mutton dish cooked with whole red chillies and the number of pieces
of red chilli actually outnumber the pieces of Mutton in the dish. He very
subtly also suggested we order a portion of yoghurt with it for obvious reasons.
I couldn’t resist and order a portion of my favorite Rajasthani dish Ker
Sangri.
The food arrived
pretty swiftly and the portions were adequate. Taste wise the Junglee Maas as
expected was awesome. The spice / chilli quotient was high as anticipated, and
it was something unusually nice and different than the usual mutton dishes one
is used to having at restaurants. Statutory warning : Laal Maas is definitely
not for the faint hearted, but is worth a try atleast once in your life time.
And if you are an adventure seeker like me, you can go on this rollercoaster
ride every time you are at spice court.
I loved the Ker
Sangri, it was delicious. I also happened to realize that there was a pastry
shop called Dzurt in the same premises and I ordered a beautiful looking cup
cake which was extraordinary.
Guys spice court
has to be on your list of must visit restaurants when in Jaipur. I can assure
you, you will not be disappointed.
