Amritsar has been my favourite winter destination ever since I was a kid. I was fascinated by the fact that there was a golden coloured temple in the middle of water and they would give delicious halwa as Prasad. Ever since I have grown up, nothing much has changed about the way I feel about this place. The only thing that has changed is my age.
I have always loved Amritsar. The place is so lively, bustling with people and
good food. A visit to the Golden Temple obviously still remains my primary reason to visit Amritsar but what fascinates me more is the package deal Amritsar offers - inner peace with some lip Smacking traditional Punjabi Food.
There was a time I used to take shatabdi train journey's to this city which were equally fun, but this year I took a flight which was reasonable and took less than an hour to reach from Delhi.
Now Amritsar does not have uber cabs, so you would need an Ola app to move around. Some areas outside the city may not have ola prime too so don't shy away from taking an Ola moto. We took the Ola to our hotel on Court Road which is centrally located and you can visit all places conveniently from here.
When to visit :
The best time to visit us from October to April when it's not very hot and the weather is just perfect

Places to visit :
1. Golden Temple - yes this is the main reason why you might want to visit. Avoid visiting during baisakhi / Lohri season could get slightly over crowded.

2. Jallianwala Bagh - walking distance from the Golden Temple this park is dedicated to the inhuman massacre ordered by General Dyer in 1919 causing more than 1500 casualties. A visit to this place will definitely leave you teary eyed.
3. Durgiana Temple - visit only if you must. It's almost a replica of the Golden Temple.
4. Town hall - walk around the town hall and take a heritage walk around the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Statue.
5. Wagah border and Atari station - I personally thought a visit to the Atari station was over rated. What makes it famous is that this is the last station on the Amritsar Lahore line. And this is the station that bears witness to one of the largest Indian train massacres during the Indo-Pak Partition. However a visit to watch the parade at Wagah border is a must. It's such an adrenaline rush to watch the India and Pakistani soldiers doing the parade every evening for lowering of both INDIA and Pakistan Flags. It's a beautiful ceremony and the entire atmosphere is filled with patriotism.
Where to Eat :
My list is very comprehensive which you can cover in a two night 3 day kind of a stay and I am choosing only the top most places that you must not miss.
1. Kesar Da Dhaba - it's a hundred year old place serving traditional Punjabi food. Famous for their Dal Makhani with Palak paneer. Personally I would recommend not to go with very high hopes. Only visit for its legendary value.
2. Ahuja Lassi - Must visit for that big glass of Punjabi Lassi
3. Charming Chicken - famous for its butter chicken and CFC (charming fried chicken) . Eating CFC will be your better than KFC moment for sure.
4. Kanha Sweets - superb chooley poori and Lassi for breakfast.
5. Giani Tea stall. - visit for special shahi meva malai chai garnished with nuts
6. Makhan Fish - totally over rated. The fish and chicken at Beera Chicken is far superior
7. Beera Chicken - what wow naan and what wow fried fish and Unique Tandoori chicken. You will not find such Tandoori chicken anywhere
8. A-one Kulfa - only opens post 3pm. I can have like 10 played after another of this awesome kulfa. A superb Punjabi dessert place.
9. Monu Kulcha - Amritsar may have loads of Kulcha places but this one by far is the best Kulcha place. The kulcha is flakier, crispier and tastier than any other Kulcha place. Located in Ranjit Vihar, Loharka Road.
10. Brother's / Bhravaan da dhaba - visit only if you think you cannot visit Monu kulcha. Try their Amritsari Kulcha and dal makhani
In short Amritsar is a great place for that short weekend trip to Un-wind and enjoy some delicious, rich, flavourful Punjabi food
