Now Royal cafe and their Basket Chaat is so hard to ignore when you are visiting Lucknow, and definitely impossible to miss if you are in Hazratgunj. Located in the centre of the Huzratgunj market this cafe is the inventor of the world famous basket chaat.
You have the option to stand and eat outside or sit inside in the restaurant and eat. Now mind you if you are new to Lucknow and you are new to basket chaat and have never ever had a chance to savor this unique vegetarian dish I might begin by warning you. A basket chaat my friends is a meal in itself. If you have the stomach size of a bird then this dish aint for you to finish alone. This is definitely not for the faint hearted.
A basket chaat is huge. Sorry its gynormous or should I say it is a monster chaat. Theportion size is enough for two people with an average appetite. Do not, I mean do not even think of ordering anything else if you have ordered basket chaat. Finish it and then think of ordering something else.
A basket chaat is a concoction of all Indian chaat dishes into one, hence heavy and impossible to finish by one person. It is a combination of a Lachcha tokri stuffed with Tikki, cholley, small bhalla, papdi topped with tamarind chutney and yummy mint chutney and lots of yoghurt, garnished with green coriander, bits of ginger and sev and pomegranate.I am sure the mere description of the dish made you faint. And for 180 bucks its street food lovers paradise.
Of course its heavy, I had full plans of eating lunch post this, but to my utter disappointment, me and my husband had to finish it and post that we had no space left for lunch. What a pity. But the chaat is tangy and refreshing and nice and definitely a must have if you are visiting lucknow.
