Elma's Bakery - Haus Khaz Village - Over priced and Over hyped - 2/5

Long breathtaking walk up the 3 floors. Breathtaking actually, coz I was out of breath post I climbed 3 floors and I was hoping that it better be worth it. Was it or not? Well, read on and find out. Elma’s is a bakery and an English style tea room, in Haus Khaz village, with a decent furniture and cozy ambiance. There are flower pots, plants, lamps hanging from the ceiling and the sitting though limited is quite cramped. The place was almost empty, with only one occupied table on a Sunday evening which ought to have been a sign. Not taking the hint, we still went in, wanting to explore what was the hype all about.

Supposedly their tea is sourced from a tea estate in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, and the chocolate, cheese and butter imported from Europe. Well, is it worth it? May be for others, not for me. Even though they have a commendable variety of breads and gluten free products, but isn’t that available at another French bakery just few steps ahead, in Haus Khaz village itself? I had read somewhere- that the most delicious thing that should not be missed at Elma's is the delicious Red Velvet Cake! And the day I visited, apparently they didn't have much on offer in the cake/any dessert section- and I was there around 6pm, and it seemed everything had either finished or the items that no one likes are the left overs. So I settled for a slice of the much heard of Red Velvet Cake. Even though the menu seemed to have loads on offer but since we had to wait forever to be served, and even for the menu’s considering that there was only one more occupied table in the entire tea room. The service is below average and the waiters are lost and need to be a lot more enthusiastic and proactive towards their customers.

We had ordered for the red velvet cake, even before we asked for the menu’s, and strangely even though they did not have to bake a fresh case, it took so much time to come to our table.  And let me be honest and upfront, It was average, not a disaster, but I dint understand what the hype was all about. Even though it tasted fresh and creamy and everything, but I have had better, definitely. Elma’s fell short of expectations. Their menu and selection is only great on paper, but poor in execution, since half the items we wanted to have were not available. And suddenly the waiter vanished, he was busy chatting with the manager / guy at the cash counter. We kept calling him to order more, may be a latte or a sandwich, but he didn’t seem interested to come take the order. We got the hint that we were unwanted customers, so we got up, paid an exorbitant 250 + tax for one slice of red velvet and left.

Quite expensive one’s pocket and one would definitely be insane shelling out such money only for the hype, the ambiance or the poor service.
