I started 2015 with a Rajasthan Road trip to Jaipur, Ajmer, Salasar and Pushkar and all along this road trip I had the good fortune of tasting the awesome Rajasthani Thali's all along my journey. Starting with the Fantastic Thali I had at LMB or Laxmi Mishthan Bhandar in Jaipur as its popularly called, to the authentic Village Thali in Choki Dhani Village Resort and the SBM Hotel and restaurant Thali with the Yumm Ker Sangri and Gatta curry in Salasar. I tried and tested and tasted from the best in Rajasthan. Also having had Rajasthani food in Delhi at Rajdhani (which I think is pretty OK) and Suruchi (in Karol Bagh - Which is great too), I had huge expectations from Kathputli restaurant.
I went to Kathputli on a Friday afternoon post an afternoon of Shopping with Mom and Dad who by the way having lived and spent a lot of time in Rajasthan, I was looking forward to their expert comments on the food at Kathputli. Located in the heart of the Defense Colony market, just above the famous Defense Bakery, this 3 month old Restaurant created a lasting first impression on me with its authentic Rajasthani ambiance and decor. Loved the hand painted murals on the walls and beautiful traditional Rajasthani artefacts and uniforms of the serving staff.A true Rajasthani atmosphere I thought and then I saw beautifully laid EPNS covers, very Royal and authentic to the core.
The courteous and smiling serving staff escorted us to our seats and sat us down and presented the menu for the day which had a collection of 21 different dishes on the days menu and they also mentioned that they change the menu on a weekly basis. They also mentioned that the restaurant opens for Lunch and for dinner and is busy on weekends. They discussed the menu in depth and started with a Tomato shorba and a Pudina Pani as the welcome Drink.
I was impressed and intrigued by the dishes in the Thali. Food was fantastic with typical Rajasthani favourites like Dal Baati Churma, Gatta Curry, Ker Sangri, Moong dal halwa and Papad ki sabzi. Food was refreshing and traditional Rajasthani without an overload of unnecessary oil. I was blown away and impressed by the freshness of the ingredients and the prompt service. We ate to our hearts fill and what's great is that Mom and Dad my experts in Tradiotional Rajasthani Food were impressed as well and loved every morsel of the Thali. Mom especially loved the Saag and the Moong Daal Halwa. For me the stars were the cut Samosa, Phool Kachauri, Saad, Basundi and Gatta Curry. Baati was fantastic with the Daal, absolutely mind blowing.
The place is a perfect blend of great satisfying food in a great ambience coupled with great service. What more can one ask for. This is what Sam calls soul food. The satisfaction of having an Indian meal is irreplaceable and soul satiating and this is what one experiences at Kathputli.
So coming down to the Thali ingredients, let me try to count all the 21 dishes if I can :)
Lastly, let me tell you, you ought to make Kathputli your destination for spending a memorable meal with your friends and Family and you will love me for recommending the place.
