Pa Pa Ya, Mumbai - Pan Asian Bistro - 4/5

Massive Restaurants, from the house of the legend Jiggs Kalra which runs a number of successful restaurants in Delhi including Made in Punjab and Farzi cafe and the famous Masala Library in Mumbai has opened its flagship pan-Asian bistro in Mumbai called Pa Pa Ya. The bistro serves Progressive Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodian and Chinese cuisines in an "innovative and quirky way" with molecular gastronomy being the twist in taste. The bistro has been named PAPA-YA as papaya is the most common ingredient in pan-Asian cuisines.

I was in Mumbai on work and was looking at a place to have a nice time with friends so I googled and landed up at Pa Pa Ya. The restaurant is located in the heart of Palladium Mall in Lower Parel and is spread over 2000 plus square feet area. Metallic cuboids in the shape of molecules, projecting their theme Molecular Gastronomy and projectors projecting 3-D images onto the walls, great music and some lip smacking food are the USP’s of Pa Pa Ya. Pa Pa Ya is reasonably priced and I loved their youthful and vibrant ambiance with crimson walls, the molecular mixology cocktails, super tapas, yummy dim sums, and a rocking sushi selection. The menu is very promising with loads of options across various cuisines. Service is prompt considering they were packed even on a weekday.

Every dish served is unique in its own way and quite mesmerizing. When we were seated our server Ashutosh introduced himself to us and brought us amuse- bouche of watermelon in lemongrass and chili foam served in 4 shells in a smoky basket with liquid nitrogen creating the sci-fi effect. I felt as though I was in a star wars movie only minus the space ship.

The cocktails I tried and loved were Yin-yang ( vodka based) and Lighthouse - a lemon grass infused vodka cocktail. The cocktails simply proved molecular gastronomy at its best. I cannot stop raving about the delectable miniature sushi burgers that were super cute in presentation and superb in taste. The Sushi Pizza slices stole the show. Named as Tuna Tataki Pizza it’s made on thin tortilla crackers with seared sliced tuna base and topped with jalapenos. The Pizza was the highlight of the evening for me and oh my God, what an innovative dish. Equally delightful was the Chorizo Takoyaki – a grilled octopus and Pork Japanese dumpling which was simply delightful. Another great dish was the Ebi tempura – a Prawn tempura roll.

The Butayakitori apple and Beetle leaf Tartare has a taste one cannot fathom. Soft and mushy Pork belly skewers glazed and char-grilled with Soy, it is one rock star of a dish. The crispy Corn curd with coconut milk and raw mango is a rocking vegetarian dish.

For mains we tried the superb Lamb Rendang which is a rockstar dish. Loved the mildly spiced Lamb version, having had a beef version that I tried in Malaysia some years back.
By the end of the meal we were so full that we skipped dessert. Over all Pa Pa Ya is a place that you must visit if you are tired of visiting the usual diners because this place has something very different to offer and has the perfect ingredients to ensure you have a great meal and an overall experience.
